How to remove inbox label in Gmail



Gmail’s labels are the online alternative to the folders found in standalone email programs. While the emails are not literally stored separately, the labels make it possible to sort them as if they are. As helpful as labels are in keeping email organized, sometimes they are a nuisance User can easily remove them on his Gmail page or through his Gmail settings.

One of the easiest and most well-known ways of categorizing and organizing emails in Gmail is through the use of labels. Time changes, and user may eventually realize that he does not need or use an inbox label in his Gmail account any more.


User can’t delete or edit labels by using the Gmail app on a mobile device. He will need to use a computer for this one.

  1. Click on the gear icon in the top-right corner, and select “Settings” from the dropdown menu.
  2. On PC or Mac computer, open Gmail and log in, if prompted.
  3. He will be taken to the Settings screen. Click on the “Labels” tab at the top of the window.
  4. Scroll down to the “Labels” section.
  5. There are a couple of options to edit a label.

# If user wants to just change the label’s name, he can simply click on the label’s current name, type in the new name, and press the Enter key. He can also change the label’s name by clicking “edit”.

# If he wants to change the label’s nesting properties, click “edit” under “Actions”.

  1. He needs to click “Save” in the pop-up window when he is finished editing his label.
  2. To delete a label entirely, click “remove” and then click “Delete” in the pop-up window.

Another Process:

Access the Label Menu:

On the left side of the Gmail page. Hover user’s mouse over the label he wants to remove and access the drop-down menu by clicking on the down arrow. In the menu, he needs to click on “Remove label” to delete the label from the list. This also removes the label from all messages that were associated with it.

Gmail Settings:

Alternately, he can edit and remove labels in his Gmail settings menu. He needs to click on the gear button near the top right of his Gmail page, needs to scroll down to “Settings”, and click on “Labels”. He needs to find the inbox label in the list and click “Remove”.
